Kindergarten Math Journals
Kindergarten Math Journals is a digital download containing 60 math journal tasks aligned with the Common Core State Standards. All tasks allow for multiple entry points and recording techniques, thereby allowing all students in your class to work at their individual level of thinking. Also included in the file are resources for use with some of the tasks such as dot cards, ten frames and numeral cards.
Key concepts and skills covered in the tasks, include:- counting,
- comparing numbers,
- working with the numbers 11-19 to gain foundations for place value,
- identifying, describing, creating and composing shapes,
- representing and solving addition and subtraction problems,
- describing and comparing measurable attributes, and
- classifying objects and counting the number of objects in each category.
The 60 math journal tasks are formatted so that you can either print and cut out the labels or, alternatively, print the tasks on adhesive labels Avery Standard 5160 Address labels to save time cutting and pasting. Just print 2 pages of labels for each student (30 tasks per sheet), peel and stick at the top of students' math journal pages. No need for messy glue! You may choose to use one task per week to supplement your mandated curriculum or use several tasks per week depending on the amount of time you are able to allocate to hands-on, problem solving activities. Either way you will be providing your students with valuable opportunities to organize, clarify and reflect on their thinking while developing important mathematical skills and understandings aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
Below are examples of different ways in which Kindergarten students recorded their thinking when working on some of the tasks included in Kindergarten Math Journals.
