3rd Grade Math Journals

3rd Grade Math Journals is a digital download containing 60 problem solving tasks and a four point math journal rubric in student friendly language. Content for all tasks is based on the Common Core State Standards and includes:
  • representing and solving problems involving multiplication and division,
  • understanding properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division,
  • multiplying and dividing within 100,
  • solving problems involving the four operations,
  • identifying and explaining patterns in arithmetic,
  • using place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic,
  • developing understanding of fractions as numbers,
  • solving problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects,
  • representing and interpreting data,
  • understanding concepts of area,
  • recognizing perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguishing between linear and area measures and
  • reasoning with shapes and their attributes
The 60 math journal tasks in this .pdf file are formatted so that you can either print and cut out the labels or, alternatively, print the tasks on adhesive labels Avery Standard 5160 Mailing Labels to save time cutting and pasting. Just print two sheets for each student (30 tasks per sheet) and pass out for students to stick at the top of their math journal page. Use one task per week to supplement your mandated curriculum, or use several tasks per week depending on the amount of time you are able to allocate to problem solving activities. Either way you will be providing your students with valuable opportunities to organize, clarify and reflect on their thinking while developing key mathematical skills and understandings aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

Please note that as many of the math journal tasks are open-ended and have more than one possible solution no answer key is provided. If you require clarification regarding any of the tasks please contact us. Below are examples of different ways in which 3rd grade students recorded their thinking when working on some of the math journal tasks included in this file. See our Math Journal Gallery for more student work samples.

Task 2: There are 16 apples to be put into bowls. Each bowl must have the same number of apples. Show as many different solutions as you can.

Task 58: Make the largest square possible on a geoboard. Use rubber bands to divide the square into 4 equal parts. How many different ways can you find to do this? Record each solution on geoboard paper and label the area of each part as a fraction of the whole.

Task 50: Mr. Brown is designing a fence to go around the perimeter of a vegetable patch. He has 30 meters of fencing. What are some possible designs?
