K-2 Measurement and Data Activities

The tables below provide examples of K-2 Measurement and Data Activities aligned with the Common Core State Standards. These activities are designed to elicit a range of responses and provide opportunities for students to communicate their reasoning and mathematical thinking.

All K-2 measurement and data activities are suitable for use in Math Centers, small group or whole class settings. Instructions for each task are typed in large print and written in child-friendly language to enable students to work on activities independently after a brief introduction to the task. All files for the K-2 measurement and data activities listed are in PDF format and can be accessed using Adobe Reader.

KINDERGARTEN: MEASUREMENT AND DATA ACTIVITIES
MEASUREMENT AND DATA
Describe and compare measureable attributes
K.MD1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
Possible Activities:
Using a Balance Scale
Concept Books: Have each child complete the sentences and illustrate their own copy or enlarge the pages and make them into a class Big Book or wall story.
What is Heavy?
What is Light?
What is Long?
What is Short?
What is Tall?

K.MD2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of/less of” the attribute, and describe the differences.
Possible Activities:
Is it Longer?
Is it Shorter?
Comparing Towers
Which is Heavier?
Which Weighs More?
Which is Longer?

Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category
K.MD3 Classify objects into given categories; count the number in each category and sort the categories by count. (Limit category counts to be less than or equal to 10)
Possible Activities:
Sorting Attribute Blocks

1st GRADE: MEASUREMENT AND DATA ACTIVITIES
MEASUREMENT AND DATA
Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units
1.MD1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.

1.MD2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object is being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.
Possible Activities:
Measuring with Sticks
Measuring Shoes
Measuring with Connecting Cubes
Measuring with Dominoes

Tell and write time
1.MD3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks
Possible Activities:
My Favorite Time of Day
Time Barrier Game
Time Barrier Game Grid

2nd GRADE: MEASUREMENT AND DATA ACTIVITIES

MEASUREMENT AND DATA
Measure and estimate lengths in standard units
2.MD1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Possible Activities:
Measuring Strips
Measuring Paths
Path 1
Path 2
Path 3

2.MD2 Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Measurement with Two Units

2.MD3 Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
Estimating Length

2.MD4 Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard unit length.
Gummy Worm Stretch
Are You A Square or a Rectangle?

Relate addition and subtraction to length
2.MD5 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Linear Measurement Word Problems
More Length Word Problems

2.MD6 Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0,1,2 …, and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram.

Work with time and money
2.MD7 Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
Time Barrier Game
Time Barrier Game Grid
One Hour Earlier, One Hour Later

2.MD8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using $ and cent symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
Coin Counting Cup
Coin Barrier Game
Make One Dollar
Money Word Problems

Represent and interpret data
2.MD9 Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
Measurement Line Plot

2.MD10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
Possible Activities:
Button Bar Graph
Button Pictograph
Collecting and Representing Data
