K-2 Geometry Activities
The tables below provide examples of K-2 Geometry Activities aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
All activities on this page are suitable for use in Math Centers, small group or whole class settings. Instructions for each task are typed in large print and written in child-friendly language to enable students to work on activities independently after a brief introduction to the task. All files for the geometry activities listed are in .pdf format and can be accessed using Adobe Reader.
KINDERGARTEN GEOMETRY ACTIVITIES
| GEOMETRY | Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres) K.G1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. Possible Activities: Geometry Sentence Frames (Set 1)*new! Pattern Block Barrier Game Barrier Game Grid (1x3) Barrier Game Grid (3x3) and Positional Words Shapes on the Geoboard Literature Link: The Shape of Things (see right column for task card)
K.G2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. Possible Activities: Geometry Sentence Frames (Set 2)*new! Shape Robot Book template Shape Sort
K.G3 Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”) Possible Activities:
Geometry Sentence Frames (Set 3)*new!
Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes K.G4 Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/corners) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length). Possible Activities: Shapes, Shapes, Shapes Book template
K.G5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes. Possible Activities: Literature Link:When a Line Bends a Shape Begins (see right column for task card)
K.G6 Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes. For example, “Can you join these two triangles with full sides touching to make a rectangle?” Possible Activities: Build a Hexagon Build a Block Pattern Block Pictures Literature Link: Mouse Shapes (see right column for task card)

1st GRADE GEOMETRY ACTIVITIES| GEOMETRY | Reason with shapes and their attributes 1.G1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g. triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. Possible Activities: Geoboard Squares Comparing Polygons Writing Template My 3D Shapes Book Comparing 3D Shapes Writing Template
1.G2 Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape and compose new shapes from the composite shape. Possible Activities: Fold a Square*new! Cover a Hexagon Tangram Squares Tangram Triangles Literature Link: Grandfather Tang's Story (see right column for task card)
1.G3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. Possible Activities: Fraction Pictures *new! Make a Pizza *new!

2nd GRADE GEOMETRY ACTIVITIES| GEOMETRY | Reason with shapes and their attributes 2.G1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes Possible Activities: My Polygon Riddle Comparing Polygons Comparing 3D Shapes Color Tile Shapes Skeletal Models *new! Literature Link: The Greedy Triangle (see right column for task card)
2.G2 Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them. Possible Activities: Dividing a Rectangle into Equal Parts Making Rectangles
2.G3 Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape. Possible Activities: Geoboard Halves *new! Geoboard Fourths *new! Fraction Barrier Game Fraction Barrier Game Grid Equal Parts on the Geoboard
